Abstract
In contrast to children, intussusception is rare in adults, and its etiology differs. A demonstrated organic lesion as the cause of intussusception is found 90% of adult cases, and about 65% are caused by primary or secondary neoplasms. Therefore, identifying the underlying causative lesion before surgery is important for providing the optimal treatment. While intussusception presents acutely in children, acute intestinal obstruction is uncommon in adults and most patients present with subacute, intermittent, or chronic symptoms. The preoperative diagnosis is often difficult because the clinical presentation in adults is usually nonspecific and variable. We report the case of a 62-year-old man found to have an intussusception caused by an appendiceal abscess with appendicoliths, with a review of the literature. (Korean J Med 75:S767-S772, 2008)
