Abstract
Extrahepatic manifestations of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections are rare. In particular, neurologic manifestations combined with acute hepatitis infection are very rare, and have not been reported in Korea. We experienced a case of acute encephalitis caused by an acute HAV infection. A 25-yr-old male presented with severe headache, vomiting, and fever. IgM antibodies to HAV were detected, and laboratory findings showed acute hepatitis. CSF exams were compatible with acute encephalitis. The patient recovered completely with conservative treatment. We report the case with a literature review.
