Abstract |
Biliary cystadenomas and cystadenocarcinomas are uncommon tumors that are often incorrectly diagnosed as simple liver cysts. However, biliary cystic tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis when these cystic tumors are seen on abdominal imaging studies as multi-septated cysts with papillary infoldings. Once biliary cystadenomas are diagnosed clinically, complete excision is mandatory because these tumors have the possibility of malignant transformation. We report here on a case of intrahepatic biliary cystadenocarcinoma that showed an aggressive clinical course. A 61-year-old female presented with dyspnea on exertion. Mutiloculated hepatic cysts with pericardial effusion were detected on the abdominal CT scan. The patient underwent surgical exploration for diagnostic confirmation and treatment. The pathologic diagnosis revealed biliary cystadenocarcinoma. This is the first case report in Korea of a patient who was diagnosed as suffering from biliary cystadenocarcinoma with pericardial invasion.(Korean J Med 72:S110-S115, 2007)
