Abstract
Ischemic colitis associated with colon cancer is a rare condition; an obstructive lesion, usually in the distal colon, is usually identified in these patients. This condition is thought to be caused by elevated intraluminal pressure and bacterial stasis in the obstructed bowel, which leads to the development of the ischemia. Usually, the ischemic colitis improves after conservative treatment. Serious complications such as gangrene, perforation and peritonitis are rare. We report a case of gangrenous ischemic colitis proximal to a cancer of the sigmoid colon that was confirmed by colonoscopy and surgical findings. (Korean J Med 73:S871-S875, 2007)
