Abstract
The ingestion of foreign bodies into the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is common. The majority of ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously without any sequelae. However, the ingestion of foreign bodies may result in a variety of complications involving considerable morbidity and mortality when perforation of the gastrointestinal tract does occur. We present a case of liver abscess caused by an ingested chicken bone fragment in an elderly woman, who was successfully treated with laparotomy. This report illustrates the difficulty in obtaining a preoperative diagnosis. There were no specific symptoms or signs, and the lack of history of ingestion of foreign body may put a patient at risk for fatality due to delayed diagnosis. This rare condition should be considered when dealing with cases of hepatic abscess or even septic shock of unknown origin.(Korean J Med 73:S910-S914, 2007)
