Abstract
There have been several clinical reports suggesting that some of herbal medicines can cause reversible aplastic anemia. We present two cases of reversible aplastic anemia that appeared to be associated with herbal medicines. A 43-year old woman and her son, 21 years of age, developed pancytopenia. This was noted after frequent ingestion of juice extracted from various herbal medicines such as Korean raisin, elm, arrowroot, licorice, and Youngji mushroom for 4 months. Bone marrow examination revealed hypocellularity in both patients. There was no other possible cause of the pancytopenia except the herbal medicines, which were discontinued immediately. The pancytopenia spontaneously improved over 3 to 5 weeks after the diagnosis of aplastic anemia. The clinical course of these two patients strongly suggests that herbal medicines can be the cause of reversible aplastic anemia.(Korean J Med 73:S1029-S1032, 2007)
