Abstract
It has been reported that catechin, Ecklonia stolonifera, and Phellinus linteus have anti-oxidative activity and hepatoprotective effects. However, the possible toxicities of these plants are not well known. We describe an 82-year-old-woman who developed acute hepatic injury induced by functional food containing catechin, Ecklonia stolonifera, and Phellinus linteus, which she was taking to treat general weakness. Her acute hepatocellular injury developed after 8 weeks administration of this food. Other causes of hepatic injury were absent in this patient. The patient developed decompensated liver function with jaundice, hypoalbuminemia, ascites, and coagulation abnormalities. Her toxic symptoms and biochemical abnormalities improved after conservative therapy for 20 weeks.
