- Abstract
- Background : Normal ageing causes a decrease in early diastolic velocity with an increase in late diastolic velocity. However,
there are still uncertainties regarding normal values of left ventricular (LV) diastolic velocities in elderly humans. Therefore, the
purpose
of this study was to establish the cut-off values of diastolic mitral annulus velocities in elderly subjects using pulse and
color tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Methods : Twenty-one healthy subjects > 70 years of age (76 ¡¾ 6 years, female 12)
without cardiovascular disease underwent echocardiography including pulse and color TDI. Mitral annular velocities from lateral
and septal side were assessed. LV diastolic function was assessed by Ea and Aa, and abnormal low was considered as < 95%
lower confidence limits for Ea. Results : Mean Ea in septal and lateral annulus were 5.9 ¡¾ 1.2 and 8.0 ¡¾ 1.2 cm/s by color
coded TDI, and 6.5 ¡¾ 1.3 and 8.4 ¡¾ 1.4 cm/s by pulsed mode TDI. Mean Aa in septal and lateral side were 8.6 ¡¾ 1.6 and 10.7
¡¾ 2.3 cm/s by color coded TDI, and 8.9 ¡¾ 1.8 and 11.2 ¡¾ 2.1 cm/s by pulsed mode TDI. The mean values of septal and lateral
Ea obtained by color code were lower than those by pulsed mode TDI, but differences were insignificant (P=0.148 and 0.370,
respectively). Conclusion : These results suggest that the threshold value of septal and lateral Ea used to identify diastolic
dysfunction should be approximately 5.1 and 7.1, cm/s in color coded, and 6.0 and 7.3 cm/s in pulsus mode TDI.
