- Abstract
- Objective : Women before menopause are thought to be relatively safe from cardiovascular disease due to the protective effects
of estrogen. There is shortage of data concerning on the risk factors for coronary artery disease in premenopausal women.
Methods
: We recruited 162 premenopausal women who underwent diagnostic coronary angiograms between Jan 2001 and Jun
2006, and classified into two groups with (n=33) or without coronary artery disease (CAD) (n=129) (documented by coronary
angiogram having more than 50% diameter stenosis). And we investigated the factors associated with the coronary artery
disease in premenopausal women. Results : Initial diagnosis was stable angina in patients (16.0%), unstable angina in patients
(60.6%), and acute myocardial infarction in patients (23.4%). The patients with CAD was older than the patients without CAD
(47.18¡¾3.5 vs. 44.02¡¾5.2 years). The prevalence of current smoker and diabetes mellitus was higher in the patients with CAD
compared with the patients without CAD (15.2 % vs. 4.7 %, p=0.049; and 24.2% vs. 7.0%, p=0.008). Body mass index, and the
prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia were similar between the groups. Erythrocyte sedimentaion rate (ESR), c-reactive
protein (CRP), fibrinogen, and homocysteine were similar between the groups. Left ventricular ejection fraction was not different
between the two groups. Conclusion : Predictive factors for coronary artery disease in premenopausal Korean women are old
age, current smoking and diabetes mellitus.
