Abstract
Acute HIV infection is a transient symptomatic illness that is characterized by high titer HIV replication and a robust and expansive virus specific immune response. Although 50~90% of the patients acutely infected with HIV will experience the symptoms of acute HIV infection, this infection is often misdiagnosed as another viral illness. Because no specific antibodies are detectable during this period, the definite diagnosis usually requires a high index of clinical suspicion that is based on the clinical symptoms and the history of exposure, in addition to performing specific laboratory tests such as p24 antigen and HIV RNA assays. We describe here a case of acute HIV infection that was confirmed by the p24 antigen and HIV RNA assays, and the HIV ELISA antibody test was initially negative.(Korean J Med 71:S1165-S1169, 2006)
