- Abstract
- Gastrointestinal hemangiomas are rare, with an incidence of about 1 per 14,000 persons. The rectosigmoid is the most common location of this disease in the colon. Cavernous hemangiomas of the transverse colon are very rare. Gastrointestinal hemangiomas usually present in childhood or young adulthood. The clinical manifestations include abdominal pain, anemia, obstruction, and, rarely, platelet sequestration, although approximately 10% of patients remain asymptomatic. We report a case of cavernous hemangioma of the transverse colon that developed in a 48-year-old female. This patient, who had suffered from iron deficiency anemia for several years, visited our hospital because of abdominal pain. Colonoscopic and endosonographic examination showed a bluish-purple colored pulsating mass of 3.5¡¿2.8 cm in size in the transverse colon. The patient underwent segmental resection of the transverse colon for diagnosis and treatment. The final pathologic diagnosis was a cavernous hemangioma.
