- Abstract
- Persistent infection with parvovirus B19 is an important treatable cause of anemia in HIV-infected patients. The failure to produce neutralizing antibodies to parvovirus B19 may result in persistent viremia and chronic pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) in immunodeficient patients.
We report a case of parvovirus B19-related PRCA in an AIDS patient. The patient was a 39-year-old male who was confirmed to have HIV infection 4 years earlier. He developed a normocytic anemia 5 months ago (hemoglobin 9.9 g/dL), which worsened slowly. He complained of exertional dyspnea and required a blood transfusion. At admission, his hemoglobin was 4.6 g/dL. The bone marrow examination was consistent with PRCA and positive for parvovirus B19 DNA using the polymerase chain reaction. He was given intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) 400 mg/kg for 5 days and his anemia improved. He has been observed without relapse for 3 months. (Korean J Med 75:S913-S916, 2008)
