Abstract
Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin that has been increasingly used in hospitals. Its potential adverse effects, however, have not been thoroughly explored. Unlike the other well-known side effects of cefepime, its neurotoxic effects have rarely been reported. Most neurological side effects associated with antibiotics occur in patients with renal dysfunction. A 67-year-old female with chronic kidney failure was admitted with febrile sense and lower back pain. The patient was treated with cefepime against pyogenic spondylitis and subsequently suffered from deteriorated mental status. Encephalopathy as a side effect resulting from drug treatment was suspected after other possible causes had been ruled out. The antimicrobial prescription was stopped, and the patient’s mental status recovered. In conclusion, the clinical course of the patient improved after immediate withdrawal of cefepime.
